Mexico City is massive, and deciding where to stay can honestly be a little overwhelming. Over the past few years, I’ve visited Mexico City five times, staying in and exploring several different neighborhoods along the way.
The good news is that there are a handful of neighborhoods that make particularly good bases for exploring the city. Roma and Condesa are my personal favorites, especially if it’s your first time in Mexico City, but Polanco, Centro Histórico and a few other areas are worth considering depending on what kind of trip you’re looking for.
Below, I’ve broken down the 6 best neighborhoods to stay in Mexico City, what I like (and don’t like) about each, and my recommendations for where to stay.
Where Should You Stay in Mexico City?
If it’s your first trip to Mexico City, I’d personally start with Roma or Condesa. Both are walkable, packed with restaurants and cafes, and make it easy to get around to the rest of the city.
That said, they aren’t necessarily the best fit for everyone. Polanco is a better choice if you’re looking for luxury hotels and shopping, while Centro Histórico puts you right near many of Mexico City’s biggest historic sights.
Neighborhood | Best For |
|---|---|
Roma Norte | First-time visitors, great restaurants and nightlife |
Condesa | Great cafes and a more relaxed stay |
Polanco | Luxury hotels and shopping |
Centro Histórico | History, sightseeing and budget options |
Coyoacán | Culture, the arts & a more local feel |
San Miguel Chapultepec | A quieter stay away from the busiest tourist areas |

#'s 1 & 2: La Condesa and Roma: For Digital Nomads or Long Term Stays

La Condesa and Roma are two side-by-side neighborhoods in Mexico City that share a similar vibe, often considered as one. These areas are perfect for digital nomads seeking cozy cafés with reliable Wi-Fi, vibrant nightlife, and a retreat from the city’s hectic pace with two sprawling green parks—Parque México and Parque España.
The neighborhoods appeal to both tourists and locals, making them ideal for longer stays if you want to immerse yourself in local life. With a charming blend of Art Deco and modernist architecture, the area is also a creative hub, filled with art galleries, boutique shops, and cultural spaces.
I personally believe that Roma and La Condesa is the best area to stay in Mexico City. It’s a safe and comfortable oasis in the center of all the action. And as a bonus, if you stay here, it’s within walking distance of (in my opinion) one of the best street taco stands in the world: “Tacos El Gato Volador.”
Best Accommodations in Roma & La Condesa:
- Best for Remote Workers: Outsite: If you’re a Digital Nomad, or planning on working full time while in Mexico City, check-out the Roma Sur location of Outsite. It’s recently opened and a gem in the center of the city. I trust this company wholeheartedly, and often stay with them during my travels all over the world. You do need a membership to stay here, but it’s worth it if you plan on visiting multiple cities and staying in Outsite more than once per year.
- Best for Backpackers & Budget Travelers: Hostel Home: This is a great option for backpackers, solo travelers, and budget travelers that want to stay in the tranquil Roma Norte area. It’s well rated for it’s comfort and location. If you are a remote worker and stay here though, be advised that the work space isn’t as ideal as it would be in an Airbnb or Outsite mentioned above; and you’d have to seek out a nearby cafe to work. If you’re not working and just traveling for fun and on a budget, this is a great option.
- Best for Luxury Travelers: La Valise Hotel: This hotel offers luxury and charm with its beautifully designed suites and personalized service, perfect for travelers with a higher budget, seeking a unique stay. Its prime location in the trendy Roma neighborhood, surrounded by restaurants, galleries, and cultural attractions, makes it ideal for exploring the city’s creative scene.
#3: Colonia San Miguel Chapultepec: For Travelers that Want a Local Experience

Colonia San Miguel Chapultepec offers a tranquil alternative to the bustling La Condesa and Roma for visitors seeking a quieter escape from Mexico City’s hustle and bustle. This tree-lined neighborhood is predominantly residential, providing an authentic experience of local life without the tourist crowds.
Though not in the center of tourist attractions, San Miguel Chapultepec is just a 15-minute walk from La Condesa and Roma and a short Uber ride from the city’s key sights, such as the well-known destination Xochimilco. Additionally, its lesser-known status often means more affordable accommodation compared to the more popular areas.
Best Accommodations in San Miguel Chapultepec:
- Best for Remote Workers Looking for a Local Experience: Outsite: There’s a great Outsite location in Colonia San Miguel, designed for remote workers visiting Mexico City. The space features communal living, a co-working area with reliable Wi-Fi, and requires a membership to stay.
- Best for Mid-Range Budget Travelers: Hacienda Gobernadores: Charming, boutique-style accommodations in Mexico City at a mid-range price, blending traditional Mexican design with modern comfort. Its convenient location near the city center, combined with cozy amenities and a peaceful ambiance, makes it a great choice for travelers looking for both affordability and an authentic experience.
- Best for Higher-End Accommodations: The Green Park Hotel: This hotel is located next to Chapultepec Park, offering a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city. Its central location provides easy access to excellent dining options, with cultural landmarks just a short walk or Uber ride away. It’s an ideal choice for travelers seeking both relaxation and exploration, especially those on a short-term visit.
#4: Polanco: For High End Hotels & Shopping

Polanco is the top choice for travelers seeking a high-end experience in one of the best neighborhoods to stay in Mexico City. Known for luxury, it boasts upscale hotels, renowned restaurants, and designer shopping along Avenida Presidente Masaryk, the city’s version of Fifth Avenue.
Polanco also offers cultural attractions like the stunning Museo Soumaya and the world-class Museo Nacional de Antropología. Nearby Chapultepec Park, one of the largest city parks in the Western Hemisphere, is perfect for outdoor activities and exploring Chapultepec Castle.
For those with the budget to spend on a visit to Mexico City, Polanco is ideal for a mix of luxury, culture, and safety.
Best Accommodations in Polanco:
- For Short Term Travelers Willing to Splurge: Casa Polanco: One of the best hotels in Mexico City. Offers high-end travelers an elegant, boutique stay in one of Mexico City’s most luxurious neighborhoods, combining timeless design with personalized service. Its prime location near Chapultepec Park and exclusive shopping on Avenida Presidente Masaryk makes it perfect for those seeking both luxury and convenience.
- Luxury Experience in the Heart of Polanco: W Mexico City: Another high-end hotel offering a luxury experience in the heart of Polanco. Provides a trendy and luxurious experience, with stylish rooms and a vibrant atmosphere perfect for modern travelers. Its central location in Polanco places guests close to upscale dining, shopping, and cultural attractions like the Museo Soumaya and Chapultepec Park.
#5: Coyoacán: For the Fridah Kahlo Lovers

Coyoacán, one of my favorite neighborhoods in Mexico City, is perfect for those interested in arts and Mexican culture. Famous for being the home of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, its highlight is the Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul), offering a glimpse into the life of this iconic artist.
With cobblestone streets, colonial-era buildings, and lively plazas like Plaza Hidalgo, Coyoacán retains a village-like charm. It’s a more relaxed alternative to busier districts, ideal for exploring the city’s cultural roots at a slower pace.
Best Accommodations in Coyoacán:
- For a Boutique Experience Just Steps from the House of Fridha Kahlo: H21 Hospedaje Boutique: This mid to high-end-range budget hotel’s beautifully designed rooms and peaceful atmosphere make it ideal for travelers looking for comfort and a unique, cultural experience away from the city’s busy areas.
- For a More Local Experience: La Casita de Coyoacán: Provides an authentic, local experience with its cozy accommodations in one of Mexico City’s most culturally rich neighborhoods. Staying here allows travelers to immerse themselves in the charm of Coyoacán’s cobblestone streets, vibrant plazas, and traditional markets, all while enjoying a homey, welcoming atmosphere.
- For Budget Travelers and Backpackers: Hostal Cuija Coyoacan: A great choice for budget travelers seeking affordability without sacrificing comfort. Its central location in the charming Coyoacán neighborhood offers easy access to local attractions, markets, and affordable dining options.
#6: Centro Histórico: For Tourists that Want to See Historical Sights & Backpackers

If you’re visiting Mexico City for a short vacation focused on historical sights, Centro Histórico is the perfect choice. This central neighborhood offers easy access to iconic landmarks like the Zócalo, Palacio de Bellas Artes, and the Metropolitan Cathedral, as well as museums such as the Museo del Templo Mayor and the Museo Nacional de Arte.
During the day, Centro Histórico is bustling with street vendors, shops, and restaurants, making it lively and convenient for exploration. It tends to quiet down at night, making it ideal for travelers who prioritize daytime activities. Budget travelers and backpackers will also find well-reviewed, affordable hostels in the area.
While I personally prefer more serene neighborhoods like Roma and La Condesa, Centro Histórico remains a popular choice for its convenience and proximity to historic sights.
Best Accommodation in Centro Histórico:
- Best for Luxury Travelers: Gran Hotel Ciudad de México: Offers a luxurious stay with its stunning historic architecture and elegant interiors, providing a unique experience in the heart of Centro Histórico. Its prime location puts you within walking distance of iconic landmarks like the Zócalo and Palacio de Bellas Artes, making it an ideal base for exploring Mexico City’s rich cultural heritage.
- Best for Mid-Range Travelers Who Want to be in the Center of the Action: City Centro by Marriott Ciudad De México: An excellent choice for travelers eager to see tourist attractions, thanks to its central location in the historic city center. Its proximity to major landmarks like the Zócalo, Palacio de Bellas Artes, and the Metropolitan Cathedral ensures easy access to Mexico City’s top sights.
- Best for Backpackers and Travelers on a Budget: Hostal Regina Centro Historico Ciudad de Mexico: Staying at this hostel offers budget travelers affordable accommodations without compromising on comfort, making it an excellent value for money. Its central location provides easy access to major attractions and local eateries, allowing guests to explore Mexico City economically.
